Foiled (2006)

Blue October

Review of Foiled

When I heard the first song, I began to smile.

There are a lot of new bands out there and there is a lot of new music from all types of genres.  Too many bands are trying to make rock music, but stay on either the edge of pop or sway towards the heavy nu metal that is out there today.  Blue October has found a comfortable existence somewhere in the middle.

With a voice that reminds me that has a Roger Waterish quality to it, front man Justin Furnstenfels sings not only the melodies, but also the lyrics.  He brings the message and imagery of the songs to life.  The accompaniment by band members guitarist CB Hudson, bassist Matt Noveskey and drummer Jeremy Furstenfeld transform the songs into an entertaining mixture of sounds and music.  The accompaniment of a violin played by Ryan Delahoussaye only ads to the superb quality of the music.

As the title to this review says, when I heard the first song, I began to smile.  If you enjoy some of the rock classics of the late sixties and the seventies, you will enjoy this album.  The first song lulls you in to their music.  There is a Pink Floydish quality to it and it just makes you smile thinking about all of those great songs you do not hear any more.  Aptly enough, the song is called “You Make Me Smile.” The album continues into the second song with the same melodic pace.

Blue October shows its musical versatility throughout the album, going from a seventies rock beat to the third song (“Into the Ocean”) which may be too pop (think 80s British Invasion pop), but then goes into the hard punk/metalish “What If We Could.”  Then they break into one of the best songs on the album, Hate Me, which is neither soft nor hard, but a good song with a good beat.

The musicians show their skills and versatility throughout the album and can drive the beat heavily or play softly, such as in “Let It Go” which also includes some simple, yet deep lyrics.  I am not going to go through the rest of the album, but make sure to check out the upbeat playing and lyrics in “Overweight.”

This is one of those rare CDs that could be played from beginning to end – and played again, and again.
