Do You Feel (2007)

The Rocket Summer

Island / Def Jam

Review of Do You Feel

This guy is a one man band - literally. He wrote and arranged all the music - that is just the tip of the iceberg.  He also sang all the vocals and played all the instruments.  Yes, the drums, guitars, bass, percussion, synthesizers, organ, Wurlitzer and harmonica were performed by one guy, Bryce Adams (with very few exceptions).  This one man show has talent in so many areas, it is just amazing.  To release an entire album where you are the whole band is purely amazing, and by the way, he was also co-producer on the CD as well.

With such talent, it is no surprise that his songs are good.  They all have an up-beat tempo accompanied by various instruments.  However, although this helps out some of the songs, it also hinders some as well.  While the music is uplifting, the differentiation between the vocals and individual instruments are too muddled together at times, like each one is trying to out-do the other.  Instead the music and vocals melding together, at times they all seem to be shouting. Luckily, this is not prevalent throughout the entire album.

One of the highlights of the album is the lyrics.  He is a poet of musical literature that exceeds your expectations.  They are not simple little commercially based repetitive words, the lyrics seem to have meaning and depth even when taken separate of the music. I like that.  There are not many lyrical songwriters left and to hear one was refreshing.

Although this is not his first album, I think the production aspect of his music still has a little more maturing to undergo before he becomes a household name.  However, this album is solid and full of good music and worth listening to.
