Review of Combinations

Usually when I do a review of an album, I usually try to first find out a little bit about the artist or group first.  Although it sometimes gives me a preconceived notion as to what type of music I am going to be listening to, I began listening to this album almost entirely in the cold.  In fact, I could not recollect anything about Eisley either.  I kept on thinking about the Eisley Brothers.  Just to let some of you know, sometimes the advance CDs I get in are not in the final packaging that hits the stores.  Some, such as in this case come in a yellow cardboard holder and include a CD with the name of the artist (with some legal jargon about its use) and a card with the name of the artist, album title and a list of the tracks. So, I have no idea what the artist looks like or even any hint of what the album is going to be like.

Before I was able to listen, I either thought I was going to be listening to a alternative rock band (with male vocals) or some pop diva belting out bubble gum lyrics.  What I heard was neither.  It was some "chick" with a clean clear voice accompanied by some great music and lyrics.  It is different from what I have been hearing lately.  If someone, especially a female vocalist, has a good voice, either it is not accompanied by any real instrumentals, or put to waste doing bubble gum junk music.  Although there is a "pop" essence to the music, it steers clear of that genre with actual music accompanying her vocals and "real" lyrics.  The songs also do no maintain the same beat and will vary from one another (what a concept) and will even get fairly "mellow" at times.  The only big criticism I have of the album is that the voices and songs are at a higher pitch, which could get annoying if played at a prolonged period of time.  I have the same comment about Barbara Streisand (who I must admit I love), but I still listen to her.

This is one of those albums that will stay in my "play again" rack.
