The Block (2008)

New Kids On the Block

Interscope

Review of The Block

New Kids On the Block PictureI was very surprised by the first track on the album.  It starts out very slow and smooth, with a gentle harmony of the lyrics.  I guess what I was expecting was something a lot more upbeat and representational of the "old" New Kids On The Block (NKOTB).  Not a bad song, although an unneeded rap takes you out of the mood of the song. If you are looking for that upbeat pop/dance stuff, not to fear, because the songs begin to take an upbeat beginning with the second song.  Most of the other tracks have more of that quicker dance beat, but besides just being poppier, they have a much more modern song than their processors. Then there are songs like "Grown Man" that are pop, not dance, but just have a great sound (maybe due to the invludence of the Pussycat Dolls & Teddy Riley).

The major point that must be commented on about the album and the group as a whole is that the quintuplet is comprised of a number young men with very talented voices.  The management company for the band did great work in compiling a great group of kids that can sing and harmonize with each other.  This is something that becomes obvious from one song to another.  The tracks are produced to showcase their voices, as opposed to just producing songs in which this group just sings along to.

My major complaint about the album is the lyrics and arrangement of most of the songs.  You have these five youngsters with some great voices, but the stuff they are singing sounds very commercially contrived (e.g., "Sexify My Love"). Although I had mentioned above that it was great that the producer did not over-synthesize the music or overpower the group with too much instrumentals, however, the lack of any really good instrumentals on the songs is very glaring.

So overall, it is a good album, with a very talented group of singers, but I felt that some of the songs were lacking in either lyrics or arrangement.  However, as a whole, you will not be disappointed.
