Big Bad World (2008)

Plain White T's

Hollywood Records

Review of Big Bad World Album

Plain White T's PictureSometimes we forget that bands not only come together for the purpose of selling albums and making music.  There was that initial spark and enjoyment of music that made them strum that first guitar, bang on that first drum or belt out that first tune.  They meet others with the same passion for music and try to mesh their talents together to provide music first for themselves, then for the masses to enjoy.

Plain White T's are one of those bands that even with their continuing success, they sound like they enjoy what they are are doing.  The songs, although a little more refined from previous albums, not only sound great, but are enjoyable to listen to -- both musically and lyrically.  I don't know, maybe when they hit the fame status of a Rolling Stones or U2, they may dance to another tune, but for now they are still providing good, fun music. I am not going to say that this is a great album, but the tracks, instrumentals and lyrics are solid on each song.

My big criticism of the album is that many of the songs sound a bit too monotonous, such as in in "Rainy Day," where although their is great harmony, that repetitive bass line just becomes too much after a while.  Although, the production quality has increased from previous albums, at times the music seems a little bit over-produced. However, the album is good overall, with some major gems, such as in "1, 2, 3, 4," which is my favorite track on the album. Everything seems to come together on that one song. The album also closes out with another great song, "Someday."
