37 Notebooks (2008)

Jeremy Schonfeld

Jersongs Music

Review of 37 Notebooks

The cover of a CD is usually very tell-tale of the album I am about to hear.  Not being familiar with the works of Jeremy Schonfeld, my thoughts began to drift towards a soulful sound, maybe even jazzy at times.  The use of shadow also provides that almost "night-clubish" atmosphere of a pianist playing while the patrons drown themselves in their drinks while smoke and talk fill the air.

Upon listening to the first notes of the opening track "Storyteller," I was immediately struck with a voice an lyrics that made me think of Gordon Lightfoot. I do not know if it was the tone of voice or the key he was singing, or maybe my longing to review an album where I can sincerely say "this artist is going to be a legend." I am not going to suggest this of Schonfeld; I have enjoyed listening to the album, but not yet in the category of a Billy Joel, Bernie Taupin or Lightfoot for pop music, nor a Gilbert and Sullivan in broadwayesque style as well.

The cover of this album was not tell-tale of what I was to expect.  The album was a lot more upbeat than I had anticipated. It was full of Broadway show type tunes and provided vocals not only from Schonfeld (who is not singing in most of the songs), but from a variety of other artists singing to his music and lyrics (after my first time listening to the album, I will then read the jacket notes).  Although unexpected, it was not unwelcomed.  You can hear the energy and exuberance of the lyrics and music.  If you like show tunes, you will definitely enjoy this album - he puts the music and lyrics together in a perfect mix and unleashes it through his music.  If show tunes are not your "thing" you might not be turned on to his music, although there are a few softer songs that you might enjoy.

Love or hate this type of music, the production quality of the album is exceptional and the the lyrics are a head above most musicians out there today.
