and an Irish mother, Nuala Quinn. She moved to New York City when she
was five years old and was naturalized as a citizen of the United States
in Los Angeles on February 3, 2006. She has an older sister, Zoe Barton,

Career
Barton began
her acting career at the age of nine in New York Theatre with a lead
role in Slavs!, written by Tony Kushner. She took part in many Broadway
plays, taking a lead role in James Lapine's Twelve Dreams at Lincoln
Center. She made her film debut in Lawn Dogs, which won awards at film
festivals around the world. Since then she has appeared in several
films, including The Sixth Sense, Notting Hill, and Lost and Delirious,
in which she starred. During this early period she was also featured in
numerous Television Commercials and Print campaigns. She has been
represented then and to the present day, by long time friend and mentor
Ivan Bart of IMG Models New York.
Barton first
appeared on television in 1996, as a younger Lily Montgomery in All My
Children. Two years later she starred in the film Pups a modern re-make
of Bonnie and Clyde. She also had a one-time appearance in the FOX show
Fastlane, and appeared in music videos for Goodbye My Lover by James
Blunt and the Enrique Iglesias video, Addicted. She played in eight
episodes on the television show Once and Again as Katie Singer, Jessie
Sammler's (Evan Rachel Wood's) girlfriend.
She became a
household name following her lead role on TV series The O.C. produced by
McG in which she starred for the first three seasons as main character
Marissa Cooper, the beautiful and popular teenager of Harbor School and
Newport Beach, California, whose story revolves around her relationships
with on and off boyfriend Ryan Atwood, her mother Julie Cooper, and her
friends and acquaintances of Newport.
Following her
departure from the O.C. she has completed three films awaiting release
in 2007, Lord Richard Attenboroughs' Closing the Ring, the Dino de
Laurentiis Production Virgin Territory and an independent feature Don't
Fade Away. She will next work on the films Radio-Active, Walled In and
Malice in Sunderland.
Endorsements
Barton, a
veteran of an astounding number of magazine covers worldwide, and a
favorite in fashion circles, has modeled for Calvin Klein and appeared
in advertisements for Aéropostale, Monsoon Accessorize, Dooney & Bourke,
JC (Jeans and Clothes), Morgan de Toi, Jaspal, and Neutrogena Cosmetics.
She has more recently become the spokesperson for Bebe, Bebe Stores, and
Keds Sneakers who have both seen a dramatic rise in sales since the
young actress' involvement. The executives at Neutrogena made her the
cover girl for their worldwide ad campaign; in this regard Barton
followed in the footsteps of fellow teen stars Jennifer Love Hewitt,
Mandy Moore, and Kristin Kreuk. In Australia, she appears in commercials
for gossip magazine Famous.
