Alice Braga was born
on April 15, 1983 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Hew mother was actress Ana Maria
Braga.
Alice grew up with
acting in her blood. Her mother, Ana Maria Braga was an actress, and
so was her aunt Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman). She
always wanted to be in film, since going onto sets with her mother as a
young child. She began doing theater in school as well as doing some
work in commercials (which her mother’s friend invited her to do for
“fun).
Here big screen debut
was in 1998 as Claudia in the short Spanish movie Trampolim.
However, it did not take critics and movie goers long to discover her
true talents and in her second movie appearance in the role of Angelica
in Fernando Meirelles’ drama City of God (Cidade
de Deus) she was nominated for the 2003 Cinema Brazil Grand
Prize for Best Supporting Actress. [Fast fact: she first met Meirelles
when she did commercials for him a few years ealier].
Two years later, she
appeared in another critically acclaimed role as sexually intensive
Karinna, a stripper and hooker in Brazil in the dark movie Lower City
(Cidade Baixa). [Fast fact: Alice dyed her hair blond for the
role. In 2005, she also appeared in Only God Knows (Solo
Dios Sabe) and even appeared on the Brazilian television series
Carandiru, Outras Histórias.
In 2006, she appeared
her first American film Journey to the End of Night, which had
high praise at the Tribeca Film Festival. Her movie, O Cheiro do
Ralo, also showed off her talents. However, it was not until
the 2007 blockbuster I Am Legend that she finally found great
public success, an then appeared in Crossing Over in 2008.
She also appeared in the
movie drama Blindness in 2008 (starring Danny Glover and Julianne
Moore) and was nominated for the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize for Best
Supporting Actress as well as the Black Reel Awards, also for Best
Supporting Actress.
In 2010, she appeared in
two sci-fi movies, Repo Men (starring Jude Law) and the much anticipated
sequel to the Predator series Predators.
