BIOGRAPHY
|
-
Robert Charles Durman Mitchum was an American
actor and singer known for his roles in movies such as Out of the
Past, The Night of the Hunter and Cape Fear.
-
Robert Mitchum was born on August 6, 1917 in
Bridgeport, Connecticut to Harriet Gunderson and James Thomas Mitchum.
His father passed away when he was only a year and a half old.
-
His youth was very turbulent. He failed
out of schools, was in a lot of fights and even traveling around the
country as a vagrant.
-
In 1936 he calmed down a little bit and went to
live with his sister. Upon her recommendation, he joined the local
theater guild in Long Beach, California.
-
In 1940 he married Dorothy Spence who he
originally met while traveling around the country.
-
He then began appearing in a number of westerns
in 1942-1943. In 1944, he signed a contract with RKO and appeared
in a few more westerns, including Nevada.
-
In 1946, he appeared in the critically
acclaimed The Story of G.I. Joe. He was nominated for an
Academy award for Best Supporting Actor (his only nomination).
-
During the late 1940s and 1950s he regularly
appeared in many gangster movies known as film noir movies such
as Crossfire (1947) [which was nominated for five Academy Awards]
and Out of The Past (1947) co-starring Kirk Douglas, Rachel
and the Stranger (1948), Angel Face (1952) and The Night
of the Hunter (1955).
-
In the late 1950s and the 1960s, the film noir
movies came to an end, but Mitchum continued to star in other great
movies in other genres such as Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957),
The Sundowners (1960), Home From the Hill (1960), Cape Fear
(1962) and The Longest Day (1962) co-starring
John Wayne and
Henry Fonda.
-
Mitchum, besides being an actor, was also a
singer. In fact, he recorded two albums Calypso--Is Like So
in 1957 and ten year's later, recorded his second album, That Man,
Robert Mitchum, Sings which reached #35 on the country charts.
-
The 1970s brought about more movie roles for
Mitchum who took on various roles, and even came back to do crime drama
movies. The decade began with Ryan's Daughter (1970)
in which he was passed up for an Academy Award nomination and the well
received The Yakuza (1975).
-
In the 1980s, he continued to do a number of
movies. He also took his talents to the smaller screen in
made-for-movie big budget mini-series such as The Winds of War
(1983) and War and Rememberance (1988). By the 1990s, the
number of film roles began to slow down.
-
Robert Mitchum passed away on July 1, 1997
due to complications from Lung Cancer and Emphasema.
