Edward Speleers is a young British actor best known
for his debut into movies with a starring role in Eragon.
Ed Speleers was born at St. Richards Hospital on
December 21, 1987 in Chichister (West Sussex), England to John (afinancial
consultant) and [?] Speleers (divorced). He is an only child.
He had interest in acting while growing up and
appeared in his first stage production (of Peter Pan) at the Dorset House
School (near Arundel) when he was only seven years old. He has appeared in
several school plays throughout his school career. Also during school, he and a
friend even wrote their own plays which they performed to the school, including
one titled Retribution, which included controversial subject matter like
sexual abuse, borstal and paedophilia.
His first role on camera was in a short film called
Metropolis directed by Charlie Bleakey – Ed played a wankaholic.
At eighteen years old, without any professional
expeience, Edward Speleers made his major motion picture movie debut in the
starring role of the dragon rider Eragon in the fantasy movie by the same
name (based on the novel by Christpher Paolini). The whole movie project was
almost scrapped because they were unable to find right Eragon (after 179,999
auditions), until Speelers came along. Speelers later said he was glad that he
did not learn about this until after he finished filming, or else it would have
placed a lot of pressure on him]. The movie also stars Jeremy Irons, John
Malkovish, Djimon Jounsou and Robert Carlyle. [Fast fact = he had also
auditioned for the part of Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia
after the casting director Pippa Hall saw him performing in his school’s
production of the Crucible which went to William Mosely, then also had
him audition for Behind the Mask, that went to Gaspard Ulliel before
receiving the role as Eragon.]
He was in school (Eastboune College in East Sussex)
when his father called him that he received the role, then ran around the halls
screaming to everyone that he got the part. He took his A-Levels in June of
2006.
