Originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom and Jerry centers on the never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom’s attempts to capture Jerry. Jerry however, is clever and quick on his feet so Tom hardly ever manages to catch him. The original series is notable for having won the Academy Award® for Best Short Subject seven times. The first Tom and Jerry short was released theatrically in 1940.

(originally released in 1945) became Oscar® winners for Best Short Subject, Cartoons in 1945 and 1946, respectively. Other shorts featured on the DVD include Sufferin’ Cats!, Baby Puss, The Million Dollar Cat, The Bodyguard, Flirty Birdy, Cat Fishin’, The Invisible Mouse, Heavenly Puss, Jerry and the Goldfish, Cue Ball Cat, Slicked-up Pup and Jerry’s Cousin.

Our Review of Title

Tom and Jerry photoWhen you think back to your childhood, Tom and Jerry always seemed to be around.  Although the times have changed, and some additional characters have been added from time to time, the show has basically followed the same formula since its inception back in the 1940s.  The cat tries to get the mouse and the mouse out-foxes the cat, usually with the cat getting the worst of the two.  What is strange is that even though these episodes aired 25 or 30 years before I was born, watching them brings me back to my youth.

The great thing about Tom and Jerry is that they are timeless.  The episodes I watched today are some of the same ones I watched almost four decades ago, and even though they were produced decades before that, the shows could have been made yesterday.  Albeit, some of the props do provide a context of age to the shows, such as household appliances, the telephones and the automobiles.  Although these episodes would also be seen as violent to some, they are no less violent than many of the shows that young kids are watching today, such as Bakugan and Yu-Gi-Oh TV series, to only mention a few. Those shows are also a lot busier in substance and plots than Tom and Jerry, which had a very simple story line.

Tom and JerryI guess what also holds the interest of people throughout the years is that on some level Tom and Jerry appeals to everyone's inner sense of good versus evil.  Cat lovers may not fully agree, but the show was in many ways about good the bad Tom cat trying to devour the poor little good Jerry mouse.  It is that good triumphing over evil that we all love to see, because we can all relate to Jerry and use his relationship with Tom as some type of metaphor for things that happen in our own daily lives.   The worker being held down by the corporate big brothers, the weakling being bullied by the bid kids at school, the woman trying to make ends meat fighting this poor economy, etc., etc.  This is in many ways a David vs. Goliath on an animated scale.

When it comes down to it, I really do not over think these shows as I do when writing a review.  to me, I like the shows because they are entertaining, nothing more, nothing less.  You probably enjoyed these shows when you were kids, and will enjoy them if you saw them again.  Your kids would even enjoy these old Tom and Jerry episodes, even compared to a lot of the junk they watch today.
