 The Waltons

For nine seasons from 1972 to 1981, the Walton family was America's family. Viewers' hearts were captured by the story of John and Olivia Walton, their seven children, Grandpa and Grandma as they faced the Depression and World War II with not much more than a love of the land and the rock-solid support of each other. This elegiac final season is the ideal capstone to the Emmy-honored and lovingly remembered series. The Walton boys endure terrifying dangers in Europe and the Pacific, then gratefully return to Walton's Mountain when the war ends. Peace brings new challenges, but also new beginnings and - for many of the family, young and old - new love. Share the final good night with The Waltons.

Our Review of The Waltons Final Season

It was interesting writing the review for this DVD.  I had not seen The Waltons for at least 20 years and only remember the earlier seasons when all of the kids were still kids and I was able to recognize all of the characters.  Some of my first thoughts were of where are some of the people I knew, such as the grandmother and grandfather - and I guess they had passed or just got too old by the 9th season to act.  Also, I wonder what happened to the mother, and some of the actors do not look to be the same from what I remember?  Well, the show had progressed and changed over the years, so I guess so would have the cast.

Some of the things I did notice about the show is that it still, in many ways was written for the family.  Although many of the subjects of these episodes were meant for older family members.  This was because of the different issues that the family faced from day to day; serious subjects such as death, poverty, race, criminal behavior, family upheaval, and in this ninth season, we can add those subjects plus interfaith marriage, and the horrors of war.  War you say?  Well, the ninth season sees the Waltons family dealing with World War II, with members of the household fighting in the worldwide theater, and the effects of the War on the veterans after they returned home.  It is this dealing with real-life issues and the great writing behind each episode that I remembered best from the show and they continue to shine through in this final season.

One aspect of the episodes I noticed more now than when I had originally seen the show were the details relating to the time period of the 30s (and 40s by the time of this episode).  The general clothing/costumes, the cars as well as some of the backgrounds were great.  There were also a number of actual black & white clips merged into the episodes that made for some great realism of the era.

Not only did I find this last season entertaining and full of some great writing and acting, but now I will probably go back and purchase episodes 1 thru 8 to relive the seasons that I still vaguely remember and be able to fill in those seasons that I had never seen.

Goodnight John-Boy, Jason, Mary Ellen, Erin, Ben, Jim-Bob, Elizabeth, etc.

WARNER HOME VIDEO RELEASES

THE NINTH AND FINAL SEASON OF

THE WALTONS

 ON DVD APRIL 28, 2009

One of the Top Award-Winning Series of All Time

Three-Disc Set to Feature 22 Episodes

BURBANK, CA (January 27, 2009) – The final season of the critically acclaimed, award-winning television series The Waltons will be released on DVD April 28, 2009 by Warner Home Video (WHV).  Titled The Waltons: The Complete Ninth Season, the three-disc set features all 22 episodes from the series’ ninth season.

For nine seasons from 1972 to 1981, the Walton family was America’s family. Viewers’ hearts were captured by the story of John and Olivia Walton, their seven children, Grandpa and Grandma as they faced the Depression and World War II with not much more than a love of the land and the rock-solid support of each other. This elegiac final season is the ideal capstone to the EmmyÒ-honored and lovingly remembered series. The Walton boys endure terrifying dangers in Europe and the Pacific, then gratefully return to Walton’s Mountain when the war ends. Peace brings new challenges, but also new beginnings and – for many of the family, young and old  – new love. Fans will be delighted to share the final good night with The Waltons.

“One of the reasons The Waltons has been such a success with viewers is because the series genuinely captured the spirit of family loyalty and conveyed the importance of good old-fashioned values in a timeless way,” commented Rosemary Markson, WHV Vice President, TV and Special Interest Marketing.  She added, “The first eight seasons of The Waltons on DVD were very well received by consumers and we anticipate that fans will want to complete their Waltons library with the final volume.  Given the difficult climate we are currently facing, we think the messages of love, hope and perseverance this series conveyed throughout its run will resonate very strongly with the public now.”

The Waltons, which made its network television premiere on September 14, 1972 on CBS, follows one family’s journey as they run a lumber mill during the Great Depression in rural Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.  Created and narrated by author Earl Hamner, Jr., the program is a reflection of Hamner’s own upbringing during the same era, with his experiences re-told to

the viewer through the eyes of aspiring writer John Boy Walton (originally portrayed by Richard Thomas).  The close-knit family includes father John Walton, Sr. (Ralph Waite), his wife Olivia (Michael Learned), and their children John Boy, Mary Ellen, Jim-Bob, Elizabeth, Jason, Erin and Ben.  Grandparents Zeb (Will Geer) and Esther (Ellen Corby) serve as the elders of this large and loving family, who together face the challenges of the 1930s and 1940s while living on Walton’s Mountain.

Season Nine aired on CBS from November 20, 1980 to June 4, 1981 and featured 22 episodes.  The Waltons enjoyed a total of nine years on CBS and earned a total of 13 Emmy® Awards during its run.
