| The Smurfs: True Blue Friends

It's been a long time since I had seen the Smurfs in any shape form or size. I remember when they first came out in the stores, little plastic characters for all types of professions -- golfers, doctors, lawyers, firemen, etc. I remember picking up the girl Smurf (Smurfette) for a girlfriend at the time, then all of a sudden they were all over the place, including on TV. I cannot say that I was really a big fan of the show at the time -- I was not a kid at the time and too big for this kind of stuff. It was not until later that I would watch it occasionally if surfing the airwaves early on a Saturday morning (or even perhaps in the afternoons).
Now, twenty years later I am once again faced with watching these little blue people and not really enjoying the aspect of having to review it. However, I never outgrew my childhood love of animation and figured I would give it a shot. I also decided to watch it with a kid to see if it still had appeal to the younger audiences. I can say after the hour and a half to see all the episodes, we both agreed that we did enjoy it.
As far as animation goes, it is not great. However, the characters and storylines are what made the show enjoyable back in the eighties, as well as when we watched it today. Although the stories are for the most part simple, there is some depth to the characters (and even a sense of character development) as well as an underlying lesson. As you quickly learn the Smurfs are good, and do provide a good clean message for children (and adults alike). The "evil" characters are also of well developed as well.
The Smurfs, are an interesting, if not new concept. There is a "Popa" Smurf, who is the leader and other types of Smurfs that each have their own specialized area. For instance, there is a Smurf especially for tracking, cooking, sewing, exercising, etc. The one thing that had always really got me was that there was only one female Smurf -- Smurfette. Now there are all thoughts that have to go through your mind when you know the ratio of men to women are 98 to 1, but on a cleaner level, what was the writer thinking -- can't women do all of the same jobs as the men? Actually, Smurfette is actually written to be very strong and intelligent, which does compensate for this -- but then again, Papa Smurf always gives Brainy the job of being his substitute leader and not Smurfette (who may not have his brains, has a lot more common sense).
Unlike the TV series, the DVD includes a few bonus extras such as a Meet the Smurfs Village where you can meet the characters, a trivia game and a few other extras.
A great clean animated DVD for young children, but can also be enjoyed by the whole family.
