Our Review
of Title
Jonny Quest has become a classic
animated series. Although it had originally "died out" after the original
series first aired, the character has made a comeback due to an underground
movement that had always remained faithful, those that have a longing for the
good old days and the fact that today's writers cannot come up with their own
new concepts and it is much easier to take an old idea that has had some
popularity.
I was never a big fan of the original
series. No, I was not around during the original airing which was only for two
seasons and included only 26 episodes. However, I did get to see it on
re-runs years later. Sorry Hanna-Barbera, but not one of my favorites out
of the dozens of other series that I had greatly enjoyed. I saw one of the
shows from the New Adventures of Jonny Quest in the mid-80s, and was
still not impressed (it only lasted one season and 13 episodes). Although
I did know about the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest that aired in the 90s, I
never watched it based on my previous experiences, although I did hear that it
was good. But now the chance has come for me to take a look at what I had
been missing out on.
Immediately, even from the opening
credits, it was clear that the animation was vastly different -- and better than
the original. The characters and the background scenery had much more depth and
vividness. However, I had to wait to watch the actual episodes to see if
the shows had any appeal to me where the original did not. To my surprise,
it did. Okay, not an oh boy, wow, this is the best I had ever seen, but
the episodes were not bad. The Jonny Quest character seemed more real (or
as real as an animated character could be), and the stories seemed to have
greater depth than did the original series. I guess if I happen to be
surfing through the channels, and an episode was on, I would not try to click
through unless there was something much better on. However, it is not on
the air anymore, so I guess I am glad it is on DVD. After watching the
first season, I look forward to eventually watching the second (and last)
season. There is also a movie in the works with rumors of
Jac Efron playing the lead and possibly
Dwayne Johnson as an older version of JQ.
But with these guys as actors, it looks like they will be creating a movie for
the masses with a lot of hype, special effects and a script meant for the
younger and less choosy audiences.
