The Clone Wars goes back to the original Star Wars film when Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that he was once a Jedi knight the same as your father and that they fought together in the Clone Wars. Since that moment fans have been obsessed with what the clone wars were. This new TV series takes place immediately after the events of Star Wars-Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker and introduces us to some new characters such as Ahsoka Tano a girl Jedi knight as well as characters we already know.

Our Review of Star Wars Clone Wars - A Galaxy Divided

The genius of George Lucas was not just his ability to create a movie, it was his ability to create an entire universe outside of our own with its own people, history and stories.  What started almost thirty-two years ago (it was released May 25, 1977) as a sci-fi movie about good versus evil has turned into one of the largest media franchises ever, but has in turn also created legend, mythology and written about for one of the largest non-universes ever to be compared against Tolkien's fantasy world, Gene Roddenberry's world of Star Trek or the universes created by DC and Marvel.  Soon after original Star Wars movie, books based on Lucas's characters and ideas.  To me, the original movie will always be known as just "Star Wars" -- not "Star Wars: A New Hope" and not "Star Wars: Episode IV" or any variation thereof.  It is just simply, Star Wars. Anyway, soon after the movie was first released, fans, such as myself wanted more.  Since the next movie was a few years away, Marvel comics began publishing a comic, first with a re-creation of the movie, then expanding upon the original story.

A year after the movie's release, the first of many novels were written that not only delved into the characters and the story, but began adding and expanding to it to include new worlds and characters.  The first novel with an original story based on the movie was published in 1978 and entitled Splinter of the Minds Eye, and was written by Alan Dean Foster.  I not only purchased the book back then (okay, my mother bought it for me), but I did a book report on it as well (with a diorama - remember those?).  Many other works came afterwards with more novels, novellas, short stories, 5 more full-length motion pictures, TV specials (including the nonsensical Star Wars Holiday Special, which I would love to see again if anyone has a copy of it) and TV animated series (such as the object of this review Star Wars: The Clone Wars).  This abundant menagerie of works has now been labeled as the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is not the first animated series based on the Star Wars Universe. The first was Star Wars: Droids back in 1985 and 1986, which followed the antics of R2 D2 and C3PO.  In 2003, Star Wars: Clone Wars was released and followed the events occurring between movies 2 and 3 (and even won an Emmy).  In 2008, this series by almost the same name (you figure with all that writing talent, they could have come up with a different title?), also follows the same basic time frame of events that takes place at almost the same time as the first series by its name, but has also become a continuation as well.  The big difference between the two series is that this one was created in fully 3D CGI (Computer Graphics Imagery) and the visual effects are obvious as well as amazing to see.

This DVD includes the first four episodes of the series and subtitled A Galaxy Divided.  And without going into details, provides some insight into the conflicts which tore apart the galaxy and paved the way for the evil Empire to take root.  We see Anakin Skywalker as a young man, not yet tainted by the darkness that would convert him into the sinister Darth Vader, as well as other favorite characters, such as a younger Obi-Wan and a spry Yoda.  Many of the other characters from the previous movies and books also come to life in this animated series - an some new friends and foes as well.  The Star Wars Universe is one that grows from simple ideas.  This entire idea of the Clone Wars comes from a single line in the original movie where a holographic image of Leia Organa tells Obi-Wan Kenobi "Years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars."  From that point on, through contributions to the Expanded Universe, the history, legends and mythology of the Clone Wars was written and expanded upon. I am sure that there are some kids out there that know more details about the history of the Clone Wars than they know of real events such as World War I.

I have seen most of the remainder of this series, but it was great to watch the original four again, without commercials, and at my own time table.  If you have not seen the episode, even those of you out there that don't do cartoons, they actually are great and I would suggest that you see them, if not for the story, then for the amazing graphics to see what animation has become.  The only big criticism, actually two, is that this only includes four episodes (I want move!) and that it does not include any extra bonus features -- and this would have been perfect for a "making of" special, or even some type of Star Wars history retrospective.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS
Brings Four Popular Episodes

to DVD March 24

First Volume of Action-Packed Episodes Brings Hit Cartoon Network
Series to DVD for the First Time

BURBANK, Calif. (January X, 2009) – Four of the most popular episodes from the hit animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS will come to DVD from Warner Home Video and Lucasfilm Ltd. on Tuesday, March 24. The release of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS “A Galaxy Divided” marks the very first time the weekly adventures from Lucasfilm Animation have been available on the format.

The hit weekly animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS debuted this fall on Cartoon Network.  It’s the first TV series from Lucasfilm Animation that chronicles the adventures of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Ahsoka Tano and other favorite STAR WARS characters as they struggle against the dark side during the divisive, action-packed Clone Wars.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS “A Galaxy Divided” ($19.98, SRP) showcases four exciting episodes: “Ambush,” featuring a showdown between Jedi Master Yoda and the villainous Asajj Ventress; and the three-episode “Malevolence” story – “Rising Malevolence,” “Shadow of Malevolence” and “Destroy Malevolence.”  In the “Malevolence” episodes, Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano and Obi-Wan Kenobi lead a mission to find and destroy a massive warship that is under the command of General Grievous.

“As its incredibly successful run on Cartoon Network has shown, STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS appeals to a very wide, very loyal audience that spans a wide range,” said Doug Yates, vice president of marketing, distribution and online at Lucasfilm Ltd. “Many kids and parents have told us they want to own their favorite episodes right away, which is why we are releasing this compilation as well as a second four-episode compilation this summer.”

Meanwhile, for fans eager to own the entire first season of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, Lucasfilm is in the midst of producing a multi-disc boxed set that is expected to debut later in 2009. Full details of the first-season DVD boxed set, which is also planned to mark the first Blu-Ray appearance of the series, will be announced later this year. The collection will include substantial bonus material that is currently in production at Lucasfilm, including explorations of the behind-the-scenes creation of the hit series.

“Longtime Star Wars fans are eager for a collection that offers great depth and has detailed bonus materials,” Yates said. “We hope our DVD releases will offer something to please everyone, just as the first season of the series has done week after week.”

Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Sports Marketing, said, “We’re excited to begin offering this exhilarating TV series to its legion of loyal fans, as well as to an all-new generation who have helped make it such a success on Cartoon Network. STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS has brought new excitement to the galaxy far, far away, with its thrilling look into untold stories, and we know fans will enjoy these action-packed adventures.”

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS debuted on Cartoon Network in the U.S. on Oct. 3. The series also airs on broadcast networks in more than 50 different countries worldwide, and is soon to debut on Cartoon Network International around the globe.
