Our Review
of Popeye the Sailor
My
review of the first DVD could be summed up with one word -- Fantastic and I feel
just the same about the follow-up DVD that covers episodes from the following
three years (1938 to 1940). The nautical spinach eating animated hero is
at it again with more adventures and tales. Of course, Bluto is back as
the bad guy and always gets it in the end. The sexy and slanky Olive Oyl
is still the apple of Popeye's eye. The cartoons are classic -- well
written, well drawn and fun to watch. There is not much more to say, than
these are fantastic cartoon shorts and are a must to watch and to add to your
collection.
Besides these classic episodes, there
are a number of great bonus features that are worth the price of the DVD itself.
First is a very informative and thought provoking short featurette entitled "Men
of Spinach and Steel" where "experts" discuss the aspect of who was the first
animated hero -- Popeye or Superman? Although arguments can be made for
both characters, I think the bias in this short was that Popeye was not only the
first animated "super hero," but possibly the prototype for Superman. (Sound
interesting? Then you have to see the whole thing to find out more.)
The bonuses also include a homage to the men behind the sailor -- Max and Dave
Fleischer, this includes two Fleischer shorts (Paramount Presents Popular
Science and The Mechanical Monsters), an art gallery of some of Mr.
Fleischer's early works and "Out of The Inkwell" -- the story of the Fleisher
brothers. The bonuses do not stop there -- there are also
Popeye commentaries, pupumentaries, classic Paramount shorts, audio recordings
and more. As I said, the bonuses are worth the price of admission.
When something is this good, it is
hard to write about. I will just say once again that this is a must-have
DVD for anyone's collection.

Popeye,
infamous for his “muskles,” spinach and pipe, was introduced to American
audiences and became one of the most beloved characters in animation history.
Because of his distinctive jargon and memorable catch phrases such as, “Thas’
all I can stands, ’cause I can’t stands no more,” Popeye became a household
name. A humble hero, Popeye was always true to his uncompromising moral
standards and although he looked like a tough guy, he only resorted to force
when faced with a conflict that affected his loved ones. Even when close to
defeat by the evil Bluto, Popeye’s obsession with spinach guaranteed him victory
over his competition. Unassumingly, Popeye was also a hopeless romantic, faking
illness to get Olive Oyl’s attention, as seen in the short, “I Yam Love Sick.”
