Our Review of The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show DVD
In 1971, Hanna-Barbera, the makers of the Flintstones, decided it was time for the two "child-stars" of the series to grow up. The writers took the two toddlers and grew them into teenagers and centered a new animated series around the two juveniles. The half-hour episodes first aired in September 1971 and ran through its 16th and final episode the following September. However, the series was somewhat extended for another year in 10 10-minute installments that ran on the Flintstones Comedy Hour. I still remember waking up early on Saturday mornings and both of these shows were part of my morning line-up, along with many of the other Saturday morning cartoons (oh, those were the days).
Watching these episodes again brought back many memories, since I have not seen even a hint of the show since the 70s. I remembered thir friends: Penny, Moonrock and Wiggy, and vaguely remembered their school rivals Cindy and Fabian, however, one character that I have thought about from time to time over the years was Bad Luck Shleprock (voiced by Don Messick who's voice is famous for Scooby Doo). I also remembered the motorcycle gang named the Bronto Bunch as soon as I saw them again for the first time. It is always great to go back into the recesses of your mind and reacquaint yourself with old "friends." such as these. Although the series was not on for very long, I remember it going on for much longer - I guess it was all the subsequent reruns (The shows were also placed on Fred Flintsone and Friends in the late '70s, but I was not watching as much Saturday morning TV by that time).
The episodes are very interesting watching them after all these years. The writing for the show was not too bad and many of the episodes actually had coherent plot unlike many of today's cartoons. The show was appealing to the younger audiences (as I remember), and even now as an adult, I can appreciate the cartoon and some of its subtle and underlying more mature humor. The animation was classic Hanna-Barbera, and some of the voice acting was phenomenal. Some of the voice talents not only included Messick, but also Sally Struthers as the voice of Pebbles (who had just begun her role as Gloria on All In The Family), Jay North as the voice of Bamm-Bamm (Dennis the Menace), the legendary Mel Blanc as Barney Rubble and a few others (too many to mention), Alan Reed as Fred Flintstone (the original voice actor), Lennie Weinrib (H.R. Pufnstuf, Scrappy Doo and many others), and a number of other voice talents. There was a ton of voice talent on that show.
My one big criticism of the DVD is that although it does include the full 16 episodes of the series, it does not include all 10 minute segments. Yes, they did include 4 of the episodes as a "bonus." However, with 6 of those mini-episodes not included, it just does not feel complete. Maybe that will be the bait to purchase the Flintstone Comedy Hour when it comes to DVD. It would also have been nice to have a featurette of some type either about the making of the series, or even some interviews with some of the cast or production members.
All-in-all, I enjoyed the DVD and it was a great trip down memory lane. I would recommend anyone who grew up with the Flintstones or even vaguely remembers the show. It is also a great treat for any youngsters you may know.
