Peanuts 1960s Collection
|
On October 2, 1950, a comic strip by Charles M. Schulz was first published. It
featured a bunch of young children and a dog and was entitled Peanuts.
The love affair with Charlie Brown and crew had begun on that long ago Monday
which turned into a worldwide phenomenon that was printed in over 2600
newspapers around the globe in 21 different languages. By the mid-1960s,
the public was ready to see the comic strip come alive on the small screen.
The first television airing was for a half-hour special with a holiday theme and
on December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired on CBS to a
wide audience. They called upon the talents of Bill Melendez to animate the
special. This, however, was not their first venture into animating the
Peanuts characters, they actually first put a documentary together in 1963 (A
Boy Named Charlie Brown) although it never aired on TV. Due to the
great success of the Christmas special, they went to work on another special for
the following year and it was entitled Charlie Brown's All-Stars. From
1965 through the end of the decade either one or two specials were aired on
prime time TV. Specials and movies continued to be aired over the next few
decades through today.
This DVD, the Peanuts 1960s Collection includes each of these animated specials aired during this decade (with the exception of A Boy Named Charlie Brown). As for the episodes themselves, there is nothing really to say, they are works of genius. By placing them into one DVD is a great way to combine all of these "early" works into one collection (disks for the later decades are also being released). The quality of the reproduction is also quite good, although you can still see some of those grainy patches and miscellaneous dots appear on the screen. Although I kind of prefer it this way - it gives you the sense of watching it "old school," the way they were first aired. Although I was not around for most of that decade, and too young to appreciate watching these episodes in the later part, I do remember watching them in the 70s with my parents. It was kind of a special family night when these aired and brought us all together.
The holiday specials are the ones that are most remembered because they are
shown every year during each of the holidays, but it is great also to watch some
of the lesser aired specials such as Your In Love, Charlie Brown or It
Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown. I am not sure that watching the
Peanuts brings us back to a simpler time, or if Brown & Co, just lived in a
place that was just simpler, but watching the episodes just brings you back into
that child's world where your biggest fear was whether your baseball team could
beat your opponents (or in Brown's case, any team). Your world encompassed
the block on which you lived, with the exceptions being the school house, summer
camp or possibly grandma's house. The main figures in your world were your
friends, who were approximately of the same height and age, with adults being
mere ornaments on the wall (hence why adults were fuzzy voices without any form
or substance within the Peanuts world).
Besides all of these great episodes, the DVD also includes a really informative documentary on Vince Guaraldi, the composer of the music behind the Peanuts. There are a lot of interviews with friends, former members of his band and members of the Peanuts staff that worked with him on the episodes. For the Jazz aficionados out there, this is a phenomenal memorial to a great performer.
With the Peanuts, you can never go wrong.
