ABOUT THE SHOW

Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic (and still unsolved) murder of his wife, the devastated Monk became obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition eventually cost him his job, and continues to pose unique challenges in his everyday life.

Those daily challenges eventually forced Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who was always there to offer her assistance when even the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer) became an angst-ridden ordeal for Monk. Along the way, Sharona also became Monk's own "Girl Friday," an unlikely Dr. Watson to his Sherlock Holmes.

When Sharona moved back to New Jersey with her son to re-marry her ex-husband, Monk once again became unable to function in his day-to-day life, let alone solve crimes. He slowly comes out of his funk when he meets Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard), a single mom and bartender who enlists Monk's help when her home gets broken into twice within a week. Monk takes on her case only to find that the more time he spends with Natalie and her young daughter, the more he feels a connection with her - one that is reminiscent of his special relationship with Sharona.

Now working as a private consultant, Monk continues to investigate cases in the most unconventional ways. Although Monk is no longer a member of the police force, his former boss, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) still often calls upon him to provide unique insights into cases that have the cops stumped. Stottlemeyer himself is a highly decorated detective, but he knows he will never be as good as the illustrious Monk... and it drives him crazy. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Randall Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) aspires to be the department's new go-to guy, and relishes every opportunity to bolster the ego of his commanding officer.

Monk is a detective afraid of the dark, a gumshoe afraid of gum. He has no problem cracking a case - as long as it doesn't involve heights or germs, and is in close proximity to his apartment. He'd like nothing more than to gain back his position on the San Francisco police force, but can he pull himself together and get back to solving crimes full time?

ABOUT THE CHARACTERS

§        ADRIAN MONK - Tony Shalhoub

Adrian Monk  was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional methods and out-of-the-box thinking to solve some of the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic (and still unsolved) murder of his wife, a devastated Monk became obsessive-compulsive. Now plagued by various phobias, almost everything causes him angst: germs, heights, crowds - even milk. His condition eventually cost him his job, and continuously poses unique challenges as he goes about his daily life. He is in therapy for his condition, but signs of progress in overcoming his psychological disorder are spotty at best. Now working as a private consultant, Monk continues to investigate various cases using his vast intelligence and unconventional approaches. However, Monk would like nothing more than to gain back his position on the force. Can he pull himself together and get back to solving San Francisco's toughest crimes full time?

§        NATALIE TEEGER – Traylor Howard

Natalie Teeger is Adrian Monk's new personal assistant, and she's just starting to figure out what makes the so-called "defective detective" tick. Tough and self-reliant, this former bartender finds herself alternately marveling at her boss's brilliance and suffering through his quirks. And while he drives her up the wall sometimes, Natalie shares one unfortunate bond with Monk - both of their respective spouses passed away, leaving them both to pick up the pieces of their lives. Natalie is slowly but surely easing into the role of sidekick to the most brilliant detective in San Francisco.

§        CAPTAIN LELAND STOTTLEMEYER – Ted Levine

Captain Stottlemeyer is Adrian Monk's former boss, the man who was forced to let Monk go from the San Francisco Police Department when his obsessive compulsive disorder began to interfere with his ability to investigate cases and interact with his fellow officers. But even though he is no longer a member of the force, Stottlemeyer still often calls on Monk to provide his unique insights into cases that have San Francisco's finest stumped. Although Stottlemeyer is a highly decorated detective, he knows he will never be as good as the illustrious Monk - and that fact often drives him crazy.

§        LIEUTENANT RANDALL DISHER – Jason Gray-Stanford

     Monk fingerprint

Lieutenant Disher plays a figurative "Boy Friday" to Captain Stottlemeyer. More ambitious than bright, Disher relishes every opportunity to bolster the ego and reputation of his commanding officer, and is often the first to rebuff Monk's sometimes outlandish deductions, knowing full well that doing so pleases his boss.

§        DR. CHARLES KROGER – Stanley Kamel

Dr. Charles Kroger is Monk’s therapist, a brilliant doctor who lends a sympathetic ear to Monk’s many fears and phobias.  Through good times and bad, through all the difficult and dangerous cases, Dr. Kroger is there to provide professional attention and sage advice.  With his unique ability to address Monk’s problems, Dr. Kroger plays a vital role in helping Monk maintain his stature as a gifted and prolific detective.

§        JULIE TEEGER – Emmy Clarke

Julie Teeger is the daughter of Adrian Monk's new assistant, Natalie. As if coping with the stresses of growing up weren't enough for this 11 year-old, trying to understand her mom's odd new boss doesn't make things any easier. Nevertheless, Julie has bonded with Monk and continues to grow fond of him, especially since he heroically rescued her pet fish from certain death.

MONK, the critically acclaimed original series starring Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG award winner Tony Shalhoub, continues with all new episodes on USA Network on Friday, January 19, 2007 at 9pm/8cMONK remains one of the highest-rated original scripted series in basic cable history.

Tony Shalhoub (“Big Night,” “Wings,” “Men in Black,” “Cars”) has earned three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award and two SAG Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Adrian Monk, a brilliant detective who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Monk's psychological disorder costs him his position as a legendary homicide detective on the San Francisco Police force.  Due to the tragic unsolved murder of his wife, Monk has developed an abnormal fear of germs, heights, crowds and virtually everything else, which provides an unusual challenge to solving crimes … not to mention his day-to-day existence.

Traylor Howard (“Two Guys and a Girl,” “Me, Myself and Irene”), Ted Levine (“Heat,” “Moby Dick”) and Jason Gray-Stanford (“Taken,” “A Beautiful Mind”) also star.

Guest stars include Steven Weber (“Wings,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”), Ricardo Chavira (“Desperate Housewives,“ ”Six Feet Under”), Sean Astin (“Lord of the Rings,” “24”), Holland Taylor (“Two and a Half Men,” “The Practice”), David Eigenberg (“Sex and the City,” “Third Watch”), Andy Richter (“Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Andy Richter Controls the Universe”), Sarah Brown (“As the World Turns,” “Cold Case”), Heather Tom (“All My Children,” “The Young and the Restless”), James Gammon (“Nash Bridges,” “Cold Mountain”), Chris Williams (“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) Brooke Adams (“Lace,” “Moonlighting”) & Emmy Clarke (“My House in Umbria,” “Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus”) as Julie Teeger.

As season five continues, Monk suspects a radio shock jock (Weber) killed his wife but the DJ was on the air at the time of the murder (also guest-starring Tom); Monk suddenly finds himself in the middle of a shadowy murder plot worthy of a classic Hollywood film noir when a missing millionaire (Blackthorne) suffering from leprosy comes out of hiding and hires Monk to recover some papers from his estate (also guest starring Brown); the mysterious “Six Way Killer” strikes in San Francisco, and Monk’s detective skills are pitted against the flashy forensic technology of

a federal agent (guest-star Williams) as they both pursue the murderer; a fun-loving everyman named Hal (Richter) befriends Monk and for the first time in his life, Monk appears to have a buddy... but is Hal up to something?  (also guest-starring Eigenberg); Natalie suspects foul play in the deaths of her parents’ (Taylor and Cavanaugh) wealthy neighbors, so Monk goes undercover as a butler for their son (Astin) to investigate; Monk goes to the emergency room for a bloody nose, but when a doctor in the hospital turns up dead, Monk joins the murder investigation and soon finds his own life is in grave danger (guest starring Durning and Butler); and when Lt. Disher inherits a farm from an uncle who committed suicide, he comes to suspect that his uncle was murdered, so Monk joins him on the farm to investigate (guest-starring Chavira, Adams and Gammon).

MONK is executive produced by David Hoberman (“Raising Helen,” “Bringing Down the House,” “The Negotiator”), Andy Breckman (“Saturday Night Live,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Rat Race”), Tony Shalhoub and Randy Zisk (“House,” “Without a Trace’).  Fern Field (“Kane & Abel,” “Heartsounds”) and Tom Scharpling ("The Best Show on WFMU") serve as co-executive producers.  Anthony Santa Croce (“Carnivale”) and John Collier ("King of the Hill") are producers.  MONK is from NBC Universal Television Studio in association with Mandeville Films and Touchstone Television.

Fans of the hit series will once again be able to turn to MONK.USANETWORK.COM to keep track of the dynamic detective. The MONK community will be able to play a new game "Monk Shui," in which users assume the role of Monk. The game features a realistic version of Monk's actual apartment where objects and furnishings are slightly out of order. Players are instructed to reference the handy "Rules of Monk Shui" dictionary, which guides them through the apartment to put things back into "Monk Shui" order. Users will also be encouraged to upload images of their own "Monk Shui" type photos into the "User Shui" area. New blogs from the show's characters and writers will also guide readers through Monk's world outside the script, while new versions of "Are You Monk-ish" and "Monk's Mind Game" will challenge fans to re-evaluate the depths of their Monk-ish disposition.

"Mr. Monk and the Blue Flu" is the third installment of the brand new mystery series starring the brilliant, beloved, obsessive-compulsive detective from USA Network's hit show.  Joining "Mr. Monk Goes to the Firehouse" and "Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii," this latest story involves a "blue flu" at the San Francisco police department.  Despite the challenges, Monk and the squadron will have to pull together to catch an astrologer's killer, solve a series of mysterious fatal assaults, and most importantly, clean up their desks!  "Mr. Monk and the Blue Flu" will be released in January 2007 to coincide with the return of the series and is penned once again by Lee Goldberg, who has written three episodes of MONK.
