See Peter Falk solve mysteries in his own unique way

Our Review of Title

Who is the greatest TV detective of all time?  Although the answer may be debatable, for me the answer has to be Columbo.  It wasn’t just the mysteries he had to solve each week that elevates this show above the rest, but the character himself that is the real gem of the series.  What also made it great was that is was in many ways like watching a good movie, including the length of a movie (episodes were ninety minutes and some even two hours long).

For seven seasons a seemingly bumbling police detective has matched wits with some of the “smartest” criminals in the world, and put them in their places.  He did not do it with all the modern fancy techno gadgets on many of today’s shows (note, I do enjoy some of those shows as well) – he did it with old fashioned police work that included puzzling the pieces together through investigation and interviews.  It is his knowledge of people that has allowed this character to crack the cases.  By talking to his suspects and understanding their actions, he is able to back the criminals into a corner where they show their very own guilt. The art of talking, listening and understanding other people is lost in both the real world and in television, but it is this special skill that places Columbo above the rest.

Columbo is not first bumbling detective to hit the small or large screen, however, his persona has differed him from any of his contemporaries or followers.  This has a great deal to do with the actor that portrayed him – Peter Falk.  It is Falk’s own superb acting skill that has transformed this fictional being into a life-like person. For thirty-five years (1968-2003), Falk has played this character – he is the character to many of us.  This two time Oscar nominated actor won four Emmy Awards for this role (as well as other awards).  It is just awsome to watch him in this role.

This series contains the seven seasons of the hit series Columbo in six nicely displayed DVD cases.  The video reproduction of the DVDs is exceptional and allows for clear viewing, even on a wide screen set.  Each season is in chronological order that allows you to enjoy it from the very first episode to the last – or just merely watch your all time favorite episodes.  Besides the regular episodes, there are a few bonus features added to the set, most notably, a few of the Columbo movies and some episodes from the spin-off, Mrs. Columbo.

There is not much more to say about this DVD set.  I guess I might be a bit biased, but having all of the DVDs together in one collection is fantastic as a fan of the show and Peter Falk.    If you have never seen the series, you are in for a big surprise. If you enjoy suspense and mysteries, you cannot miss purchasing this set.

“Oh, just one more thing…” The first seven hallmark landmark seasons of Columbo are finally available in a single fantastic DVD set.

From the 70s’ Golden Age of TV cop shows arose this remarkable re-imagining of the genre. As modest and unprepossessing as its main character, but just as sure it would find its mark, Columbo changed the rules and won millions of fans. The TV movie format greatly expanded the scope of the mysteries, the audience usually knew who the killer was and the main character was like no crime fighter we’d seen before. Disheveled, brilliant, apparently absent-minded, Columbo never meets an alibi he can’t pick apart or a suspect he can’t question into a corner. When a murderer hears, “Oh, there’s just one more thing…,” he knows he’s as good as caught.

Both hugely popular and well-respected in the industry, Columbo attracted fantastic guest stars, including: Eddie Albert, Ed Begley, Jr., John Cassavetes, Johnny Cash, Robert Conrad, Jackie Cooper, Faye Dunaway, Dick Van Dyke, George Hamilton, Martin Landau, Janet Leigh, Leslie Nielsen, Martin Sheen, Dean Stockwell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kim Cattrall, Jeff Goldblum, Pat Morita, and Valerie Harper. While this vintage production comes with a comforting layer of nostalgia – Columbo’s trench coat is a timeless classic but other costumes have not survived the test of time so well – the masterful stories remain as involving and entertaining as ever.

Don’t miss this comprehensive collection containing every single long-format episode from the first seven-season run of Columbo, before the decade-long hiatus that marked the end of the program’s “classic period.”
