Sherlock Holmes PictureOur Review of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned his Sherlock Holmes stories a century ago, he never envisioned television.  However, if he would have been alive, the Granada Television series would have been as he would have wanted it.  The series keeps very close to the feeling of the Doyle's books, and when I think of Sherlock Holmes, it is Jeremy Brett's face that I see.  So when I got word that the full series was on DVD, I jumped at the chance to review it.

The set comes in a handsomely displayed case and the episodes are divided into five different DVDs. Even within a few moments of watching the first few  moments of the initial episode, you immediately get a sense of the time period and melodrama of the series.  Although filmed in the early 1980s, even the on-screen images take on an aura of vintage mystery movies of the 1930s.

The characters themselves are very well developed, however, one must have some knowledge of the myths behind the fictional hero in order to fully understand the nuances of each individual.  This series (mostly written by John Hawkesworth) does capture their myths and legacy very well, including the great detective's drug addiction, Watson's  beguiling nature and Moriarty's obscene genius.  All of the actors play their characters to the tee with Jeremy Brett starring as Holmes in the first of four Sherlock Holmes TV series, David Burke as his assistant Dr. Watson.  A nod also has to go to Rosalie Williams (also her first of many Sherlock Holmes series) who plays Mrs. Hudson, and of course Eric Porter who bring Moriarty's wit and genius to the screen.

The art and scenery are masterful, but it is evident that this was not a large budget and they had to keep their production costs down.  However, they made up for it with narrowed shots and superb acting.  The costumes matched the time period and brought a realistic feel to the stories.

In addition to the thirteen one hour episodes, the box set also includes a few bonuses.  In fact, if you have never seen the series, or want a way to get into the mood, preview the promo before you begin watching the episodes.  The DVDs also includes a nice "moving" photo gallery that is accompanied by period music.  There is also a biography of Jeremy Brett, but I will admit, if you do not look at it, you are not missing much.  Luckily, that is the only one real down-point of this set.

For fans of mystery, suspense, Sherlock Holmes or for those that just want to be entertained, this is a great DVD for you.

Product Detail

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes DVD

  • 13 episodes in a 5 disc set.

  • Entirely digitally remastered.

  • Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock Holmes.

This first installment of 13 episodes (of a total 41 adaptations in the series) includes some of Holmes' most famous cases and offers many highlights for fans: we meet his brother, Mycroft, and his nemesis, Professor Moriarty, we explore his home at 221B Baker Street, and witness his crippling drug dependency. Each episode takes a full hour to explore one of Conan Doyle's short stories, allowing a thorough depiction of his vision.

A century before CSI and Profiler, a single brilliant character sprang from the fertile mind of Arthur Conan Doyle to outwit the criminal underworld. Sherlock Holmes, wearing his deerstalker, furiously smoking his pipe, and occasionally taking a toot of harder stuff, lead his trusty companion and biographer, Dr. Watson, from adventure to adventure. Relying on his unmatched analytical mind, but unafraid to mix it up with his fists or to don a disguise, Holmes never failed to get his man or woman.

This Granada Television production has long been celebrated for Jeremy Brett's pitch-perfect portrayal, its exacting attention to period detail, and its faithfulness to Conan Doyle's stories.

DVD Features include:

  • Photo gallery

  • A gallery of Sidney Edward Paget’s original Holmes illustrations

  • Information about Holmes and Brett Societies
