Kerli Interview
An interview with new music sensation from Estonia
I don't think I really had any real big musical influences growing up cause my parents never listened to music. Once, my father bought a Bonnie Tyler cassette thou, so I listened to that every day when I was five:) I studied piano in a local music school since I was 8 years old and the training was really classical and strict. I guess classical music has influenced me a lot. Music, in my opinion comes from such a magical unconscious place. We don't really need to have heard any music in our lives to write the most beautiful song. Except the structure and production - that is what you learn by listening and through experience.
2) How did it feel to compete in the Eurolal event?
Eurolaul is so far behind me and means absolutely nothing. The only thing that is worth remembering, is that I performed the first proper song I'd ever written.
3) After growing up in Estonia how did you learn English?
Our school system is kinda strict, so everyone must learn english since they are 8 years old. I watched lots of movies too:)
4) How has your life influenced your songs?
My life is the one and only influence of my songs
5) What is the hardest thing about recording an album?
Getting emotionally drained. It's like feeling the feelings of one week in an hour. It's very intense. I usually get sick after a period of writing or recording.
6) Do you see the glass as half full or half empty?
It used to be half empty with lots of hope. Now it’s half full.
7) Who are your favorite musical artists?
Oh, there are so many. I am really bad with names. It's more about just listening and feeling, I don’t even care about who has made it.
But If I really have to name my favourites...
Bjork for sure, Sigur Ros. Kurt Cobain because of his amazing voice. Joni Mitchell for her gentle lyrics. Anouk for her attitude. Placebo, Coldplay, Mew, The Cure for their amazing ways of putting the chords and little hooks together. I also love Aphex Twin and Pendulum. There is too many to name. Seriously.
8) What is your favorite album?
Bjork - Homogenic
9) If you could do a duet with any person living, or not, who would you choose?
Jim Morrison. Just to hang out with him. Or Jesus. I don't know if he was able to hold a tune.
10) Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Ask me in ten years. I don't care. I don't want to know. Life would not be worth living if I would know. I hope I'm happy. That's all I want, pretty much.
