The Fountain (2006)

Plot of The Fountain

The Fountain DVD CoverRachel Weisz PictureYesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind's most indomitable foe: Death. Hugh Jackman plays that man, devoted to one woman (Rachel Weisz) and determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. His quest leads him to a Tree of Life...and to an adventure into eternity. Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) directs, continuing his string of imaginative, involving filmmaking with a tale alive with ideas and filled with astonishing vistas. "Not many films can blow your mind and break your heart at the same time, but this one will" (Drew McWeeny, Ain't It Cool News).

Review of The Fountain

The Fountain is the story of Ponce de Leon taken to the Nth degree.  The movie interweaves the classic quest genre with fantasy, futurist escapades and modern love and romance.  It is a journey of mind, time and space.  The main plot (see above) is fairly straight - the love of a man for his woman. However, the subplots are thick and although are unique in time and place but are interweaved within each other to provide for a movie that is as much substance as it is fantasy.

The movie is fresh from and does not follow the same road as most of today's movies. The story and visual effects show both imagination and vivid imagery of places, people and things.  Director Darren Aronofsky successfully takes this complicated story and brings it to the silver screen with unbelievable performances by Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.  This is a film that should have done a lot better at the box office and did not gain as much notoriety as it deserved - but now that it is on DVD, you can get to watch it as much as you like -- and it also includes some very well done special features that are a great supplement to the movie.
