Doris Day
Collection
Vol. 2
[Now available on DVD]
Doris Day was an icon of the 1950s and
Warner Home video has compiled a second box set of some of her best
movies. Day always played that beautiful do-good girl next door or the
romantic perfect wife. Together with many of Hollywood’s top actors,
she produced many classics that are just as good today than when they
were released fifty years ago.
The set includes six theatrical releases
with a number of good bonus featurettes on the DVDs to add extra
enjoyment to these wonderful movies. A short rundown of the movies
include:
1)
I’ll See You In My Dreams
– A true life story about song writer Gus Khan (played Danny Thomas).
Day plays his supportive singing wife Grace. The DVD also includes the
short The Screen Director and a romantic vintage cartoon entitled
Lovelorn Leghorn.
2)
My Dream Is Yours –
Day plays an innocent young singer that gets pulled into the spotlight
by a big agent (Jack Carson). There are many stars in this movie such
as Lee Bowman, Eve Arden, and more, including a cameo by Bugs Bunny. Do
not miss the bonuses on this DVD. They include the Oscar nominated
short The Grass Is Always Greener and a funny short entitled
So You Want to Be an Actor.
3)
On Moonlight Bay –
Another romantic comedy with Day being paired up with a college
sweetheart (played by Gordon McRae). A lot of dancing, singing and
family suspense are brought together by these two lovebirds. The
bonuses include a musical short (Let’s Sing A Song About the
Moonlight) and a vintage cartoon (A Hound For Trouble).
4)
By The Light Of The Silvery
Moon – If you could not get enough of Doris Day and Gordon McRae
in On Moonlight Bay, they have come together for another romantic comedy
with all the singing, dancing and great acting you expect from her.
There are two shorts on this DVD (both produced by the legendary Joe
McDoakes): So You Want To Learn To Dance and So You Want A
Television Set. I love vintage cartoons, and an added bonus is the
Oscar nominated cartoon From A to Z-Z-Z-Z.
5)
Lucky Me – This is my
favorite Doris Day movie in this collection. It is a well written script
about musicals with superb acting, singing (and dancing) by Day, Robert
Cummings and an exceptional job by Phil Silvers. The soundtrack to this
movie is also a classic – which is remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 as a
bonus feature. You also get an informative short When The Talkies
Were Young and another Oscar nominated cartoon entitled Sandy
Claws.
6)
Romance On the High Seas – This was
the film that started it all – her big debut in a big Hollywood musical
is set on the high seas. She could not have asked for a better way to
start her career. This movie had a talented pool of co-actors such as
Jack Carson, Janis Paige and Don DeFore, directed by Michael Cutiz and
the Epstein brothers wrote the script. Not to mention the music was
written by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn. As with all the other DVDs in
this set, there are some great bonuses such as the short Let’s Sing A
Song From The Movies and a classic cartoon I Taw A Putty Tat.
This is a
fantastic collection of movies starring the very talented Doris Day.
Watch the movies and see why America fell in love with her in the 1950s
and why you will fall in love with her all over again. |
