A Christmas Story Movie (year)

Plot of A Christmas Story

Ralphie Parker pictureIt's Christmas time and there's only one thing on Ralphie Parker's Christmas list this year: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot, Range Model Air Rifle, but many obstacles stand in the way of his dream because every adult that he confronts keeps telling him he'll shoot his eye out. Meanwhile The Old Man just got a major award (a lamp shaped like a woman's leg), and Mom is making sure The Old Man doesn't come near her turkey, Ralphie's friend gets his tongue stuck to a flag pole, and Ralphie utters the f-word infront of his father. Christmas is drawing nearer and Ralphie visits Santa at the department store in hopes of asking him for his dream gift. Will he receive it? Let's hope so.

Review of A Christmas Story (Blu-Ray)

A Christmas StoryA Christmas Story has an almost cultish following.  It is one of those few movies that truly define Christmas, if not in certain terms, but through the common experiences of the masses.  It is not that we have all wanted that Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-Shot, Range Model Air Rifle BB gun BB gun, but there has been that certain something we all wanted when we were kids that our parents would not let us buy because it was too dangerous ("you'll shoot out your eye") or other reasons/excuses our parents gave us for not purchasing something.  As we grow older we also have significant others that still tell us know when we want to purchase that special something that others just do not understand anything about.  We also have our own unique family that we can all either complain about or at least have been the subject of amusing stories.  We have also had those family dinners that were ruined in some way. [Although not Christmas, one Thanksgiving we went to a big family gathering (at least 2 dozen of us).  There was tons of food, but the oven was not working. I kid you not, but most of the dinner, including the turkey, was then cooked in on the grill in the back yard.  Luckily some stuff was able to also be microwaved.  If that did not work, the local Chineese All-You-Can-Eat buffet would have had two dozen hungry patrons for Thanksgiving dinner.]

Ralphie Making a Christmas WishThe movie was wonderfully written and includes many classic moments.  My favorite being scene with the tongue on the pole. Not to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it -- but I am sure that no one who sees the movie has forgotten that scene -- a classic.  Some of you may also have your own favorites, but that is what is great about this movie, there is a bit of something for each of us, both young and old.  Although, the movie may bring back our own memories of winters long past, it is also an entertaining movie for children.  However, if you are a parent or guardian, you should watch it with them, and provide them with the usual caveats and warnings during particular scenes.

As mentioned above, it is a great story, and the roles are well carried out by some young actors, including a spectacular performance by the young Ralphie Parker.  Besides the movie itself, which is a great reason to by the disk by itself, are also a number of excellent bonus featurettes, including a commentary by Peter Billingsley (Ralphie Parker) and Bob Clark (director/writer), another document entitled Another Christmas Story and other featurerres.

This disk on Blu-Ray or DVD is a must for your movie library.

About A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story, a nostalgic view of Christmastime in Indiana during the 1940s, stars Peter Billingsley as Ralphie, a nine-year-old who has only one thing on his Christmas list: a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Air Rifle.  With his parents unwilling to buy him the gun because he might “shoot his eye out,” Ralphie decides to mount a full-scale, hint-dropping, Santa-begging campaign.  He also endures a slew of calamities from snowsuit paralysis to the dreaded tongue-on-a-frozen-flagpole gambit.  The New York Times calls A Christmas Story, “maybe the best Christmas movie ever.”
