Plot of Blood Diamond

Blood DiamondSet against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), a South African mercenary, and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories and their circumstances are as different as any can be—until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives.

While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon—who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields—has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory. More than a search for a valuable diamond, the journey could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

Directed by Edward Zwick, the action drama Blood Diamond stars Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator), Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou (In America). The screenplay was written by Charles Leavitt (The Mighty), from a story by Leavitt and C. Gaby Mitchell.

Blood Diamond is produced by Paula Weinstein (Monster-In-Law), Marshall Herskovitz, Edward Zwick, Graham King (The Aviator) and Gillian Gorfil (Dangerous Ground). The executive producers are Len Amato (Iron Jawed Angels) and Benjamin Waisbren (V for Vendetta), with Kevin De La Noy (Ali) co-producing.

Collaborating with Zwick behind the scenes were director of photography Eduardo Serra (Unbreakable), production designer Dan Weil (Syriana), costume designer Ngila Dickson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and editor Steven Rosenblum (The Last Samurai).

Blood Diamond was filmed on location in South Africa and Mozambique.

The film opens nationwide on December 8, 2006.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Virtual Studios, Blood Diamond, a Spring Creek / Bedford Falls production, in association with Initial Entertainment Group, released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Review of Blood Diamond

Blood Diamond had five Academy Award nominations, although it should have had more.  The acting was phenomenal as well was the movie and directing.  It is not a movie I would have expected Leonardo DiCaprio to be an and enjoy, but the actor surprised me with a spectacular performance, only outshined by Djimon Hounsou (who should have won an Oscar himself).  Without rehashing the plot of the movie, it was set in a small African nation and shows us how small events may not be what they seem.  This is a story of men, family and relationships living in a larger environment of power, greed and money.

The backdrop of the movie is just as interesting as the story itself and in many ways are obviously intertwined with each other.  The film is appropriately names as the price of a diamond is the blood of the people of this tiny country.  However, even during the most horrific of times, we see that family, love and relationships are sometimes worth even more than the most precious stone.

This is a movie I would definitely recommend to anyone with a conscience or anyone that wants to watch a good movie.  The movie does have depth and a message, so those who just want to "veg," may want to sit this one out for a later time.  For those who want to enjoy a great movie, this is the one for you.

The DVD also provides a second disk with the movie overwritten with director Edward Zwick's commentary. After watching the movie for the first time, this is a logical second step. Zwick takes you through the movie from a directors point of view and provides information on the story, the history and the actors as the film progresses.  It is the perfect companion to the actual movie.  It may not have won the Academy Award for best picture, but it is tops by me.
