Review of Batman Begins Limited Edition Gift Set

Batman Begins MovieExcept for those few proverbial people living in a cave their whole life, everyone knows who Batman is.  You do not have to be a comic book geek (like me) to have an understanding of who and what this character is.  Most even know the basic story behind his origin -- his parents are killed and he then becomes Batman to take his revenge on the all the wicked with the underlying drive to find the killer and bring upon them the justice he deserves.

Batman has been a part of our culture since its creation in 1939 by Bob Kane, when the character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (I have been lucky enough to see an original copy). He was so popular, he became a mainstay of the DC comic group and remained his popularity throughout the past seven decades (with one major down period during the late 70's/early 80s along with comics in general).  The character first hit the small screen in the campy 1966 TV series starring Adam West. Although the series only lasted 3 seasons, it has been in syndication forever. As mentioned above, there was a waning in the popularity of the caped crusader beginning somewhere in the late 70s.  However, the life and popularity of Batman was reinfused in 1986 with the genius of Frank Miller's seminal "Dark Knight Returns" that did not exactly re-write the character's origin, but gave him an "edge" or many even a new persona that he did not fully show in the past.  In addition, the comic's art and story were also written for a more mature audience which also gave it a different flavor.  Batman's popularity began to grow again and he was ready for the big screen in 1989's Batman starring Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. This movie was followed by three sequels, Batman Returns in 1992 (which I liked), the made for children Batman Forever in 1995, and the awful Batman and Robin in 1997. [Batman Fact:  Although Batman is know to never use a gun, that was his weapon of choice during his earliest days in the comics.]

In 2005 Christopher Nolan was called in to turn the big screen version of Batman around.  What he did was forget about the previous trilogy and start fresh, going back to the beginnings of the character and his origin.  Nolan an co-writer David S. Goyer used the character portrayed in the Dark Knight comic and gave it new life on the silver screen.  The dark edge and internal turmoil of Bruce Wayne and his second persona are captured on the screen in this movie.  They stayed within the bounds of known pulp history of the character, but took some very clever artistic license in providing some additional depth and story line.  Christian Bale, who portrays the Dark Knight, does a wonderful job in portraying the vision of the writers and director for his role.  The acting was surprising good in a movie based on a comic adaptation. besides Bale, kudos goes to most of the case, including Michael Caine as Alfred, Liam Neeson and Henri Ducard and Gary "Sirius Black" Oldman as Jim Gordon. The movie itself is worth purchasing.

This review is not just about the movie, it is about this awesome Limited Edition Gift Set.  So, why should you shell out the extra cash to purchase it if you just want to see the movie?  Well, besides the movie itself, there are an incredible amount of extras. There are two discs.  The first one includes the movie and a theatrical trailer (which is always cool to see).  The second disk is full of bonus featurettes, which I have let known time and time again I always enjoy.  I will admit I have not had time to see them all at the time of this review, but those I watched were excellent (e.g., Genesis of the Bat Cave).  There is also a photo gallery and what looks like video games.

Besides the two disks, the box also includes a lot of other nifty items such as: Movie Money to see the The Dark Knight in the theaters (which opened this weekend), A flash drive (128 MB) with images from The Dark Knight, Batman Begins lenticular art, and a bunch of cool postcards.  There is not much more to say, this is a must have DVD for any Batman or adventure movie fan.
