The Fame (2008)

Lady Gaga

Universal Music Group

Review of The Fame Album

Wow, a pop singer with a decent voice.  I like that.  Too many times you have these really hot wanna-be divas that either have some type of hype from a prior gig as an actress, child star or just too good looking not to give them a shot at stardome.  However, Lady Gaga, as Stefani Germanotta calls herself actually has a really good voice in which the music must accompany instead of the other way around.  Too many times you listen to a track where the singers voice is so overlayed with synthesizers that their true voice is hidden (purposely).  Another trick of the album's producers is to include a number of backup singers so that the main artist's voice is mixed in with the backup and you cannot get a good sense of their true vocals. A third trick is to overpower the voice with a lot of instrumentals, so that the voice is never truly heard.  The Fame is an album where the artist's vocal talents are actually heard.  My hat goes off to RedOne (he has produced Akon, Michael Jackson and Kat De Luna) for allowing the musician to outshine the music, when in today's beat-centric club scene, the voice of the artist is not as important as the sound and the beat and their looks.

Although she has a great voice that includes a number of really good tracks, there are also a number of songs which fall flat, such as "Paparazzi" that has some high points, but just does not take them very far or for long.  Some of the material is also more of the same and either do not allow Lady Gaga to show her potential, or are just lyrically dry. For instance, "Love Game" could have been a more of a song if she would have tried to hit some higher notes in certain spots -- it just needed more power.  But as I stated, there are a number of really good songs, such as the first two tracks.

This is what you would call a mixed review.  I really liked the vocals and most of the production of the album, but there are a few tracks that just need a little more polishing.  However, this was a great debut effort from an artist that we will be hearing a lot of in the future.
