Common Struggles Album (2009)

Single File

Reprise

Review of Common Struggles

Singe File pictureFrom right off the bat, I enjoyed this album by the currently little known Single File. The lead man Sloan Anderson (also guitar & bass) has a voice that is pleasing to the ears and goes well with the droning, yet strong, sounds of the instrumentals of the tracks.  While listening to the music I began to just enjoy the simplistic, yet fun, and many times too true, lyrics along with a lively beat that made me tap my feet.

They are somewhere in the rock-alternative genre, however, there is definitely some of that west coast grunge influence in their music.  It is not a bad mix of styles, and each song does seem to change and we are not overcome with the same continues sound from track to track.  Although most songs are towards the faster end, they do slow down from time to time.  However, this is the type of album you would play at a hopping party than getting busy in the back seat of the car.

What is strikingly exceptional about their music is the vocals, and how Anderson's voice harmonizes with Joe Ginsberg (backup vocals, guitar & bass) and the instruments themselves. The meshing of vocals and music sounds natural, almost reminiscent of vocals by Simon and Garfunkel.  While listening to the tracks, someone had come into my room and had commented on how well they sounded -- and it is from someone who usually hates most new bands.

The production quality of this album was also exceptional and kudos goes to producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, The All-American Rejects, Less Than Jake) for getting the right mix between vocals and instrumentals.  The tracks were able to highlight the best of the band.

This is an album that you will definitely want to listen to and have loaded on your iPod -- and will quickly make its way as one of your favorites.  I expect that in no time everyone will know who Single File is.
