Amusing (2006)

Chris Rice

Review of Amusing

Amusing, Its Not What I Expected

Do not think of me as closed minded, but this was the first time that I had listened to a Contemporary Christian album (except for an album of Christmas songs, which really does not count). But I tried to listen to this album with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised.  Chris Rice’s voice is pleasant and the music is folkishly soothing – it is kind of like today’s Rob Thomas meets the 70’s James Taylor.  To my surprise (how ignorant of me), the lyrics were not about proselytizing the listener.  The message of god or man and woman’s relation to a higher being can be found throughout the album, but to my pleasure, it was not in my face.

If you want to listen to an album that is musically sound with solid lyrics, this is a good candidate. I have listened to the album a few times before writing this review and found myself familiar with may of the songs, such as “The Final Move,” which reminds me of many good songs I have heard before. My favorite song, however, is “Lemonade.”  I like the lyrics and tune, and even the meaning behind the song.  There are some nicely composed songs on the album, such as “Sleepyhead Sun,” however there are song like “Tick-Tock” which are just corny.

Chris Rice dies try to experiment throughout the album with varying success.  In “Love Like Crazy” he becomes a little venturous, and even sounds a little “pop” in nature, and even the prelude to the album is slightly off the norm for what you would expect for a CC CD.  All in all, this is a good soundtrack to leave on in the background of your office or home.  The album ends off on a very relaxing note in “Amusing,” but one should not listen to the album without listening to the lyrics in “The Best Song Ever.”

If you only listen to hard-driven rock music, this is not the CD for your.  However, if a good easy listening music is what you like, this is an album that you can just enjoy while driving to work, doing the dishes or just sitting at home relaxing.
